Marion Shared Use Path Construction (Phase 1) Open House Public Meeting

January 23, 2024 by Sandra

Shared Use Path Construction (Phase 1)

Open House Public Meeting

Event Date: Wednesday, January 31, 2024 – 6:00pm

Marion Music Hall

164 Front Street, Marion, MA 02738 See map: Google Maps

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation and Town of Marion are announcing that an Open House Public Meeting about the Shared Use Path (Phase I) project’s Expanded Environmental Notification Form (EENF) will take place on Wednesday, January 31 at 6 pm at the Marion Music Hall.

The open house will be hosted to provide the public with additional details about the project and answer questions about the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) Office review process for the Shared Use Path (SUP). At the Open House, project managers, town officials, and consultants will share details regarding the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act process for project review and information about the upcoming submittal of the project’s Expanded Environmental Notification Form (EENF).

The Marion SUP project consists of the construction of a shared use path in the Town of Marion from the Mattapoisett/Marion Town line to Point Road, including a path crossing and intersection improvements at the Route 105/Spring Street intersection and a paved recreational path through Washburn Lane. The proposed shared use path extends from the Marion/Mattapoisett town line near Industrial Road and ends at Point Road in Marion, adjacent to Interstate 195. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation – Highway Division (MassDOT) is proposing construction on behalf of the Town, which includes intersection improvements proposed at the Route 105/Spring Street crossing to accommodate pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular traffic. The total length of the project is approximately 3.8 miles. The project is located entirely within Marion’s borders.

The SUP will continue the development of the South Coast Bikeway, a 50-mile continuous system of SUPs connecting Rhode Island to Cape Cod, giving the Marion community increased connectedness to open space and recreation while simultaneously reducing the need for vehicle use. The SUP will provide an overall benefit to the town of Marion with a readily available resource for exercise and enjoyment that can be enjoyed by both local Environmental Justice and non-Environmental justice communities.

The project is currently at 100% design as of December and has provided advanced notice in January about the pending submission of its EENF form to MEPA.

Team South Coast Bikeway’s 22 members raise $21,854 and more!

December 31, 2023 by Sandra

Team South Coast Bikeway raised $21,854.37 for clean water in the 2023 Buzzards Bay Watershed Ride. We were the third highest fundraising team and set a new SCB team record! Thank you to our riders who rode 35, 75 and 100 miles.

New this year, we looked for sponsors who would donate matching funds to SCBA. Thank you to Servedwell Hospitality (Cisco Kitchen + Bar, The Black Whale, The Sail Loft), Aspire Dental Care, Westport Dental PC, Seaspray Container Company, Law offices of Lang, Xifaras & Bullard, and private donors for their support. Together, we raised $6000 to help complete the South Coast Bikeway. Matching donations are still accepted. Contact thesouthcoastbikeway@gmail.com for more information.

Matching funds raised will be used for design, engineering and build grants to complete the South Coast Bikeway, a planned cycling route from Rhode Island to Cape Cod Canal. The goal for team SCBA is $30,000. This is sufficient to meet the required match for a MassTrails grant of $120,000. We have projects in Westport, Dartmouth and Wareham in mind, but more coordination with those communities is needed to determine the exact needs.

SCBA is an 501c3 organization whose mission is to assist our member communities in completing their portion of the South Coast Bikeway. Our team has raised over $25,000 for the Buzzards Bay Coalition over the last 7 years.

Team South Coast Bikeway’s 22 members raise $18,195 and more!

September 29, 2023 by Sandra

Team South Coast Bikeway Alliance (SCBA) is riding in the October 1 Buzzards Bay Watershed Ride. We are recruiting team members and currently have 22 cyclists with a goal of 30 riders. If you are registered to ride, please join the South Coast Bikeway team. The funds you raise for the Coalition will be matched by SCBA sponsors, benefiting two causes.

The SCBA has been given permission to “piggyback” on the Watershed Ride fundraising. Whatever you raise for Buzzards Bay will be matched by (still-to-be determined) donors to the SCBA. Servedwell Hospitality was our first donor! You may know them as Cisco Brewers, Joes Original, The Whale’s Tail, The Black Whale, Sail Loft and more! Support has grown with the addition of Aspire Dental, Westport Dental, Seaspray Container Company, the Law Offices of Lang, Xifaras & Bullard, and a few anonymous donors. Their generosity has brought our matching donations to $6000 to date. SCBA is actively seeking other donors as well. Donate or join our team here.

If you don’t ride, please consider a donation to the SCBA team or to the South Coast Bikeway.
